Are you one of those super kind business owners? You know, the ones who discount their prices when asked. Or give advice away for free instead of charging for it? Well, it’s time to stop! Stop giving away your business assets, be they products or services, as you are not valuing yourself or what you are selling. Today is the day you stop giving things away and charge for them instead!
“Can I pick Your Brain?”
The next time someone asks to pick your brains, tell them they sure can, but here’s how much it will cost. Your time, your ideas, your services and your products are all worth money. You may think that by giving them away for free you are in a sense doing some marketing. There’s an argument for and against that, but all you are doing is not getting paid. Sure, you may get a product or service in return, but will that pay your bills? Will it cover all your expenses? Is it taking time away from your paid work? Chances are, by giving away things for free, you are the loser.
In case you are wondering, giving things away can show that you don’t value yourself, your services or your products. If you did, you wouldn’t give so much of them away! I’m going to share with you five ways to start selling, not giving away!
Five Ways to Say No to Giving Away Your Business Assets
Free is bad. Well, there is a place for free, but I find most business owners give too much away for free. That makes free bad. So here are five ways you can stop:
- Offer paid services or products first – then it’s okay if you want to give them a little bit extra as an added bonus.
- Set limits – if you feel it’s important to give your time away, set limits and keep to them. Allow only 15 minutes to chat or even just one question to be asked. After that, they’ll need to pay up!
- Practice your words – it’s hard to say no when someone has put you on the spot. Rehearsing what you are going to say before you are asked makes it much easier.
- Think in terms of general and specific – if it is general advice you are giving for free, that’s a different story to information they can use specifically and benefit from.
- Stop listening – friends, family and even clients or customers all have opinions about why they deserve free stuff. If it wasn’t your idea, don’t give it away!
