Did you realise, when making life decisions, you’re only one decision away from a totally different life? It’s true. It’s also true that making life changing decisions is damn scary. What if I get it wrong? Who can I ask for help with decision making? Where will I end up? It all comes down to Decision Making 101.
Decision Making 101 – Making Life Decisions
Good or bad, you’re making decisions every day. To get out of bed or not, what to eat for lunch, which seat you’ll sit on in the train. Decisions are all around us and they have the power to set off a chain of events. The trick is to make great decisions which will take you to where you want to go. But how do you go about making the right decisions?
- Go with your gut – when making life decisions, there’s a lot riding on your choices. If something makes you feel weird or uneasy in a bad way, don’t do it. But that’s not to say don’t do something if you are uncomfortable. Carolyn Myss, an American author and personal development speaker, once said, “Always go with the choice which most scares you because that’s the one that is going to help you grow.”
- Make an ‘I want list’ – do you know what you really want for your life? Record down everything, material and emotional, that you want. After 15 minutes stop and review your list. I’m pretty sure the answer will be there.
- Share your vision – choose people who you can trust won’t put you down. Tell them what you’d like to do. Explain how you’re going to do it. Often when we hear ourselves describe our goals, we identify areas to improve upon.
Too Much Information Doesn’t Make Decisions Easier
It is natural to want to have large quantities of information to help us with making life decisions. But sometimes, too much information is a bad thing. Ron Friedman from Psychology Today said, “The human mind hates uncertainty. Uncertainty implies volatility, randomness, and danger. When we notice information is missing, our brain raises a metaphorical red flag and says, “Pay attention. This could be important…” When data is missing, we overestimate its value. Our mind assumes that since we are expending resources locating information, it must be useful.”
When it comes to making decisions, the danger is that we keep seeking information and never get enough. Yet we feel if we don’t have all the facts, we’re going to screw our lives up. The reality is, there are no crystal balls to tell us what’s going to happen in the future. You need to do your best with what you’ve got. Remember, there’s going to be plenty more forks in the road in the future.
