So as most of you know, I work from home. This, 80% of the time, works really well for me. I have 2 young children that I can priorities and the freedom to work on my bed, best place for Wifi in the 1950’s house with only 1 phone jack.
Having said that “I WORK FROM HOME!”
- People knock on your door, peer through windows & set the dog off on a rampaging bouncing, barking nut out!
- Friends and family drop in, because well, you’re in.
- The washing machine beeps at you as a reminder to get the washing hung before that rain forecast for that evening rolls in.
It all just knocks you out of flow.
I don’t know about you, but if I’m in the right frame of mind I can power through projects. As soon as something disrupts that mind set it can add hours trying to get back into flow or stop a project completely for that day.
Being aware of this, I know I owe it to myself ย and my clients to put boundaries in place to prevent interruption and steps to get back on track as quickly as possible.
3 steps to Protect Your Space
- Put a sign up at the start of your drive way so people have a hint you are working and are not to be disturbed. You maybe doing your job, but they are also doing theirs and if their job was mind reading they wouldn’t dare knock on your door ๐
- Let friends and family know your working hours and don’t be afraid to say no when they ask if you are in for a coffee…. What are they going to do? Get arssy that you’re trying to provide?
- Not for everyone, but background noise is my friend. Headphones and the right music can cover the sound of many a bleeping appliances.
Getting back into flow after an interruption will be another days blog post, watch out for that ๐
