Public Displays Of Commitment for Your Business
As I’m sure most of you have seen by now that Emma Stone is hands down the best lip-sync-er of all time. Click here if you’ve not seen it yet (thank me later) or if you just want to watch it, again & again & again. Her commitment, even with a large change of looking ridiculous, made it one the best performance on the show ever.
It got me thinking what would 100% commitment look like in business and in life (even when family & friends might think it’s ridiculous)? And what can you do to reinforce the commitment?
The answer…GO PUBLIC!
Not many of us have the willpower to tell ourselves to do something and do it without some fear of consequence. If you’re anything like me you need a huge dose of accountability. If I don’t do whatever I’ve committed to, I’ll not only have let myself down but others will know.
Big life stepping stones come with Public Commitment; Weddings, Home Buying, Adoption all require witnesses to be valid before people will deem that you are fully committed.
So how can we apply this to our business and other life decisions so we follow through and complete?
- Social Media – We’re all on social media. It doesn’t take any time at all to post your target, what you’re committing to publicly and know that people will see it. I use this often and if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you’ll have most likely seen this.
- Coach – Have you ever paid money to someone who wants you succeed? They will help you with mindset tools you need to complete your task and create the space you need to focus. But imagine spending $1000’s on a coach and you had agreed to do XYZ before your next meeting and you hadn’t. Now think of how stoked your coach would be if you exceeded expectations. The choice is yours.
- Family/Friends – Depending on your relationships and their understanding, they can either be your best support or your harshest critics, but either way, you can use their response to fuel you. Either prove them right or prove them wrong.
- Your Worst Enemy – Do you really want them to be able to hold this over your head.
- Video Yourself – Make 2 videos of yourself from the future. 1 You’ve completed the task set; how do you feel? How has your situation improved? What possibilities have opened up? 2 You didn’t complete; how do you feel? What lessons can you take away (because of everything, even inaction, is an opportunity to learn)? What opportunities did you miss? Watch them back every day until the task is complete.
- Lift – Yes there is an app for that.
What has worked for me
One of the best ways I’ve kept myself committed to blogging was to set up Uber Supportive Blog Share Facebook Group, where it would look really bad if the host didn’t post! Some of the group at the moment are doing a ’31 Day Blog Challenge’ to get themselves in the habit of blogging regularly. Of course all of us in the group support them and hold them accountable.
Now For You: What is the 1 thing you are going to get publicly committed to? Add it to the comments bellow as your 1st public declaration, then pick 1 or several of the options above to get 100% committed. Then take the 1st step & post about it.
Just remember…..
COMMITMENT KICKS RIDICULOUS’ ASS

Great post, it’s hard to commit to things sometimes, but if you’re serious about it, it needs to be done.
Yuss. You’ve inspired me to get back into training.
Spoken truth – we all should put more commitment into many different areas of our life – only if you are able to commit you are really living, that’s my thought as I otherwise would have the feeling as if I’m hiding parts of my personality. Thanks for this encouraging post!
That is so true!
